How you’ve supported us…
For more than a decade, our unique status as a trauma-informed organization has enabled us and our partners to play a significant role in furthering constructive conversations and change on some of the most important cultural issues. Together, we are addressing issues such as race, identity, heritage, religious discrimination, disability and LGBTQ+ rights.
“Children of the Inquisition” and “Going Blind” have aired on public television! In addition, “Something Terrible Happened to Joey” is accessible through the PBS Online Learning Media site. In an effort to expand the public impact, “Going Blind” and “Something Terrible Happened to Joey” are now available as a free online resource through their respective websites.
We partnered with the New York State Education Department and premiered “Something Terrible Happened to Joey” at the New York State Museum in Albany, New York. Since then it has been viewed and utilized by over 800 educators through our website and it has close to two thousand views on the PBS Learning Media site.
Together with the New York State Education Department and people just like you, we were able to complete a study guide for “Something Terrible Happened to Joey” which has also been made freely available so that educators, community leaders, and families can acknowledge and discuss the lingering effects of trauma in our lives.
We partnered with members of the Catholic Church and held a screening of “Children of the Inquisition” at the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Center followed by a robust audience discussion. We held another screening of “Going Blind at Barnard College and partnered with artist Chunming Zheng who together with Joe Lovett were able to use Virtual Reality technology to describe the experience of vision loss for the audience.
How you can make an IMPACT…
Together, A Closer Look and you, can put more people and resources behind our outreach efforts and educational campaigns. We can bring our educational programs to more and more diverse academic, religious, and medical communities. Here is what your impact can look like:
Bringing “Children of the Inquisition” to 30 religious-institutions of all faiths in the Tri-State area and across the country in the next three years. This will help further conversations about intolerance, intergenerational trauma, and identity. The film will be accompanied by a study guide to be used by community facilitators that we will train.
Bringing “Something Terrible Happened to Joey” to classrooms and community centers outside of NY in the next three years. This will help further conversations among young people and adults about trauma, friendship, and the significance of sharing.
Bringing updated content in the spirit of our outreach campaign “Going Blind and Going Forward” that includes the latest revelations and technological advancements surrounding vision loss and continues providing perspective on dealing with the stigma and practical concerns of progressive vision loss to 40 various community settings in the next three years.
Additionally, your support will help us to further our “Emerging Voices Initiative” which helps young people explore their own and their community’s experiences of diversity, trauma, and triumph through media.
We invite you to become a partner with us in this critically important work.
“The foundations and individuals who have donated to A Closer Look have done a tremendous amount of good for not only our organization but those we serve. We hope that they can continue putting their trust in us, our mission, and our aspirations.”
